Cornhill and Atherton RR

Welcome to an ’Imagineered’ model world. The Cornhill & Atherton (HO scale) railroad only exists in my imagination, but has been designed and built with an ethos reflecting life in 1930s small town America.

The objective has been to achieve a world which could have existed and where model trains move freight and people purposefully through visually attractive landscapes. Everyone has a name and a story. Everything has a reason for being where it is.

Thanks to the power of the internet it has also been built as a collaborative development where advice and opinions from people all over the world, have helped a non-American create something fundamentally American.

Coulsen Feed and Seed

Muir models kit of the "Rifle Feed and Tack" store
I decided that this Muir models kit of the "Rifle Feed and Tack" store would form a good basis for "Coulsen's Feed and Seed" on the C&A. I wasn't too keen on the aircraft hanger look, so added a false front to change the character somewhat.

Insular Gorge

Insular gorge is the largest single scene on the C&A
Insular gorge is the largest single scene on the C&A and features a trestle in the foreground and another track on the background descending into staging via a cut and tunnel mouth. A lot of time was spent checking and adjusting the smoothness of grades to ensure trains didn't stall. The fascia is carefully curved to mirror the flowing lines of the scene.

Steam concrete mixer

Adding detail to a model railroad is very satisfying and helps to make scenes more believable as well as creating interest. Some of these details can be mini-projects in their own right and this 1920s International concrete mixer is no exception. If you recognize these words then you have already read the Steam Roller blog entry !

Material Car

I like building vintage wood car kits - usually found on eBay at very good prices. If the protoype is a little unusual (such as this Ambroid Western Union material car) then all the better.

Helix Staging

A helix can be used for staging
The wasted space inside a the helix offers an opportunity for some train staging. The C&A has a logging partner (Glanton Lumber Company) so I decided that a single track "cassette" inside the helix could provide some extra operational fun.
